Dogs want to please the people they respect. They want to please leaders. If you are not your dog's leader, he will ignore you, or take advantage of you, or simply co-exist with you in a kind of bland limbo.
He will love you either way, because dogs don't equate love with respect. They love blindly; they respect only those who have earned it.
